Choosing your route
Cycling is often a great way to get from A to B. This section provides information on choosing your route and information for those designing cycle friendly routes.
Identifying and using these routes can make a huge difference to the experience of cycling if, however, you dig a little deeper you may find that your journey can be more enjoyable than you would expect.
So, how do you go about finding the best route to use in order to benefit from cycling's advantages?
Plan a route on CycleStreets.net
Cycle Streets is a new online cycle journey planner that lets you plan a cycle journey from A to B, choosing either the quickest or quietest route depending on your confidence as a cyclist.
The journey planner is still in the beta stage at the moment, but already has great coverage in towns and cities across Scotland. To plan a cycle journey, just click here to access the site, and enter your journey details as directed.
The Cycle Streets website was orginally developed for the Cambridge Cycle Campaign, who then developed the planner to cover the whole of the UK. Cycling Scotland and the Scottish Government's Sustainable Transport Team provided a grant to Changing Pace to fund additional development work for Scotland.
Sustrans
Sustrans is a sustainable transport charity which is responsible for the creation and maintenance on the National Cycle Network.
The National Cycle Network is a great success story. Nearly half of you live within a mile of it. The Network carries over 230 million journeys each year, taking kids to school, workers to work dogs on walks, shoppers to shops - it even helps the Royal Mail deliver your post.
In the last decade, with the help of many partners, the first 10,000 miles of the Network have been completed. To view Sustrans online mapping tool to plan your route, click here.
